Let’s be honest, not every brand is sexy. If you work in travel, food, or entertainment, you have it reaaaally easy in terms of social media content. Because, let’s be real, who doesn’t binge watch Tasty videos or dream about those “Top Destinations of 2017” listicles?

For many of these brands, social media is a never-ending playground of creativity and imagination. Interesting content is always around the corner, and thinking up fresh ideas isn’t that hard to do.

Unfortunately, there are many industries who don’t have it so good. Have you ever seen a cat litter brand killing it on social? Probably not.

However, these “boring” brands, who seem to be hiding away in the uncharted territories of social media land, actually have a lot to offer online.

Let me start by saying this: Your brand isn’t boring! Or at least not to the people who are interested in what you’re selling. When it comes to social media, there’s no such thing as a boring industry online, you just have to think outside the box. To help get the party started, here are three easy ways you can make your brand a little bit sexier on social.

    • Share your story. Who doesn’t love listening to a good story? Storytelling is THE easiest way for your brand to become more relatable online. You can share employees stories, stories from clients, funny stories, sad stories, the possibilities are endless.
One “boring” brand that’s great at storytelling is Zendesk. Zendesk, for those who don’t know, is a customer support software service (yawn) that totally kills it on social. I’m not sure which video of theirs is my favourite. “This is Zendesk” is a totally unique way of telling their brand’s story. There’s also their take on a Zendesk TV commercial, and last but not least their fictional indie rock band, Zendesk Alternative.

    • Be human and show your company culture! There’s nothing more boring then when a boring brand acts boring online. (Sick of the word boring yet?) Just because you might sell doorknobs, doesn’t mean your employees are as dull as one, right? Hootsuite, a social media management platform, dedicates their Instagram account to showing off their company culture. Their account’s bio is “A look inside Hootsuite” and that’s exactly what it is. If you want to be extremely envious and possibly consider a career change, check out the company culture goals on their Instagram.

    • Educate, but don’t put people to sleep. Many people might consider your brand boring simply because they don’t know much about it. Use social to your advantage to not only educate people on your company, but your industry too. Check out Mint, an online financial service that not only has beautiful branding, but is also a constant source of education for their audience. They post articles like relationship finance tips, how to get the best deals on healthy food, and how to choose your college funding. Can you guess what their target market is?

In conclusion, if you’re one of those brands that are hiding in a deep dark corner of Facebook wondering how to peep your head out, remember you can always find the fun, interesting side of your brand. When you do, show it off on social!
